2010 Outdoor Season kicks off - June 5, 2010
The 2010 outdoor season is now officially under way. This year promises to be a great summer of soccer, for the House League, SCARDESO and competitive programs. The Club would like to introduce and welcome 3 new teams this year. We are very excited because for the first time in many years, we have girls competitive teams, and not just 1 but 2! The U14 Girls “United” squad begins play this year in the YRSL, with the goal of moving up to the CGSL for next season. The year has begun brightly for “United”, beginning 2-0 in the young season. Good luck to Coach Marino and all the U14 girls! The U9 Girls “Athena” is a brand new team this year, drawn primarily from our House League program. The girls have only been together for a short time, but have already begun coming together as a team and improving day by day! Good luck to Coach Paul and all the U9 girls. We also have the U8 Boys “Spartans” to introduce. Again, drawn from our House League program, the “Spartans” have worked hard and have started the season with great hope for a good summer. Good luck to Coach Gerry and all the U8 boys! The rest of our competitive teams from last year are back for another summer of soccer action, and the Club executive would also like to wish each of these terrific teams, and all the coaches, players and parents a wonderful summer of soccer. Finally, the House League program is back bigger than ever, with each age group sporting increased enrolment over last year, and is full to overflowing with excited young kids from 3 years old to 12 years old. Come out and check out the House League, especially the youngest kids in the U4-5 age group (including many 3 year olds) and you’re sure to be entertained. The Club executive would like to wish all participants in our various programs a fun and sporting summer of soccer. Good luck to all, and remember, having FUN is the most important part of soccer!

The team was built from a core group of summer 2009 players and some strong, new additions in the fall. The boys diligently practiced throughout the winter, improving their fitness level and soccer skills. The hard work in practice clearly showed during the games. Congratulations to the boys on a rare and outstanding achievement.

U14 “Goliaths” – West Rouge Tournament Champions - July 5, 2010
Congratulations to the U14 boys team, the Olympic Flame Goliaths, on winning the 2010 West Rouge Challenge Tournament to start the 2010 outdoor season. The boys fought hard in their first outdoor games of the season. They started relatively slowly, conceding two goals in a 4-2 victory. However, they continued to elevate their game through the rest of the tournament and did not allow another goal, culminating with a 1-0 championship final victory over a tough Oak Ridges team. Well done boys on an excellent start to the outdoor season.

U9 “Titans” – Ti’amo Festival Champions - July 29, 2010
Olympic Flame SC was well represented on the July 24th weekend by the boys U9 Titans. The players and their families were guests at the Ti’amo Festival Soccer Tournament hosted by the Club Roma soccer club in St Catharine’s. The two day event was attended by over 100 teams and included a festival with food, drinks and entertainment for the young and the old.
After going undefeated in the round robin including two shutouts vs Hamilton Croatia and Fort Erie, the Titans had a close call against Niagara Falls in the semi final, needing a last minute goal to send the game straight to penalty kicks. Down a goal in the shootout, the Titans’ ‘keeper came up with two huge saves in a row to right the ship and give his team a chance to win it, and the boys came through. The final against the hosts, Club Roma Wolves, was another nail biter, finishing tied at the end of regulation time. In the 8th minute of extra time a golden goal for the Titans earned the boys the victory and the tournament championship.
The award presentations was an exciting time as well as the boys hoisted the championship trophy on the main stage of the festival for all to see. It was a great weekend of soccer and the boys are already looking forward to returning next year to defend their title.
The team has been together for two years now in the SCARDESO program and is definitely headed in the right direction as they continue to prepare for their move into the CESL next spring. The coaches are extremely proud of this group and the progress they have made in such a short time. Next up, the Thornhill Challenge Cup August 21-22.
Congratulations to the boys, their parents and especially their coaches! Good luck during the rest of the season!
